Sumela Monastery

Sumela Monastery

We turn our direction to the Black Sea.

One of the places on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List is Sümela Monastery.

Located in the Maçka district of Trabzon, Sümela Monastery is situated on a mountain slope.

Sumela Monastery, a Greek Orthodox Monastery, is a church built 1150 meters above the sea and 3000 meters above the valley.

This magnificent structure, which leaves its visitors in awe today, also has a legend.

According to the legend, Virgin Mary entered the dreams of two priests one night and told them that an icon made by St. Luke was left there by angels at the spot where Sumela Monastery is built today.

Upon this dream, two priests, one in Istanbul and the other in Athens, set out to find the icon and found it at the exact spot where the Virgin Mary had told them in the dream. Thereupon, they turned this spot into a church.

Upon this story, Sümela Monastery becomes one of the pilgrimage points considered sacred for Christians.
